The termination of service, effective October 3, 2025, is part of a broader restructuring that will see the ultra-low-cost airline exit a total of 11 airports across the United States. This decision follows Spirit's significant scaling back of its PDX flight schedule over the past year.
This strategic pullout is a direct result of the airline's well-documented financial struggles. Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy for a second time in less than a year, hampered by a difficult recovery from the pandemic-era travel slump and massive financial losses. Since the beginning of 2020, the airline has reported deficits exceeding $2.5 billion. By August, its parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings, expressed "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue normal operations.
In addition to ending service in Portland, Spirit has also canceled plans to launch new routes from Macon, Georgia, which were scheduled to begin on October 16.

The airline has issued an apology to customers affected by the sudden cancellation of routes. In a statement, Spirit said it will directly notify travelers with impacted reservations to outline their options, which will include a full refund.
The following is the complete list of 10 other airports that Spirit Airlines will be exiting alongside Portland (PDX):
- Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Birmingham, Alabama
- Boise, Idaho
- Chattanooga, Tennessee
- Columbia, South Carolina
- Oakland, California
- Sacramento, California
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- San Diego, California
- San Jose, California
