The agreement, first reported by The Athletic, includes an initial fee of approximately £8 million, with an additional £2 million in performance-related add-ons. Crucially for Everton, the package also includes a significant sell-on clause, entitling the Merseyside club to a percentage of the profit should Rangers sell Chermiti for a higher fee in the future.
The 21-year-old Portuguese forward is set to join permanently after talks initially centered on a loan move. Everton's hierarchy deemed the financial offer too substantial to refuse as they look to generate funds for their own late-window reinforcements, with a new central midfielder like West Ham’s Tomas Soucek stated as a priority.
For Rangers, the move comes quickly on the heels of selling striker Hamza Igamane to Lille. Chermiti will be tasked with helping to fill that void. He arrives at Ibrox with a point to prove; despite his €12.5 million move from Sporting CP in 2023, he failed to score in 24 appearances for Everton, starting just a single Premier League game in two seasons.
Provided the deal is completed without last-minute issues, Chermiti will be reunited with Kevin Thelwell, the former Everton director of football who originally signed him and now holds a key role at Rangers. The signing would be one of the first major moves for new head coach Russell Martin, the former Southampton manager appointed this summer to lead the club forward after a disappointing exit from Champions League qualifying.
