Paid parking in the area will now run from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, extending well beyond the traditional evening cutoff.
Why the Change?
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) says the extended hours are aimed at encouraging more parking turnover for nightlife spots like bars, restaurants, and event venues. The city hopes the move will make it easier for patrons to find parking during Portland’s busiest hours for dining and entertainment.
PBOT officials noted that the decision followed a period of data collection, which showed increased demand for parking as downtown foot traffic continues to rise with post-pandemic recovery.
The First District to Do It
The Central Eastside is currently the first area in Portland to adopt extended paid parking hours. If it proves successful, it could become a model for other entertainment-heavy neighborhoods like the Pearl District or Mississippi Avenue.
Related Moves
This update comes as nearby cities and suburbs also adjust their parking policies. Troutdale, for example, recently introduced weekend-only paid parking at Glenn Otto Park to help reduce overcrowding during peak days.
For Portland visitors and locals alike, these changes mean planning ahead when heading downtown or out for a late-night meal.
