Sheriff Michael Shea expressed relief that the situation was not worse, stating, “Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more.”
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the attack unfolded. Tiffany DeFell, 36, of Honor, Michigan, was in the parking lot when chaos erupted. “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out,” she said. “This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living.”
Victims Hospitalized, Suspect Apprehended
Munson Healthcare, the region’s largest hospital, confirmed that all 11 victims were being treated for stab wounds. Hospital spokesperson Megan Brown reported that six were in critical condition, while five others were listed as serious late Saturday.
Law enforcement officials recovered a folding-style knife believed to be the weapon used in the attack. The suspect, identified as a Michigan resident, was taken into custody by Michigan State Police. Authorities have not yet released a motive.
Officials Respond to the Tragedy
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement condemning the violence: “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.”
Walmart also released a statement, calling the incident “unacceptable” and expressing gratitude for first responders’ swift action. The retail giant pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.
The FBI has also joined the investigation, with Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirming that federal agents were on-site to assist local authorities.
